Symptoms vary at different ages of the people. Children below the age of 2 years, usually, show rashes on their scalp and cheeks with fluid leaks. These rashes can be extremely itchy which can cause further infections. Children above the age of 2 years show the rashes behind the creases of their elbows and knees, and also on the neck, ankles, wrists and the creases between the buttock and legs. If the rashes stay on the skin for a long time, it can worsen and make bumpy rashes which can be lightened or be darken in color with time. Then these rashes turn to the thick knots which will cause permanent itching. For adult people, rashes are mostly occurring in the creases of the elbows or the knees and neck, but it can cover the whole body with time. These rashes create permanent itchiness and more dry and scaly skin than younger people. Further scratching and rubbing always worsen the situation. 

Treatments for Eczema 

Generally, there is no option for treating eczema 100%. But dermatologists prescribe some oral medication and steroids as the skin care solutions based on the symptoms and ages and in some cases, light therapy. But, there are some home safety and preventive measures. 

Home safety measures 

  • To alleviate the symptoms of eczema, people can take some easy and simple measures in their home. They are- 
  • Taking baths with lukewarm water and applying regular moisturizer will help a lot to minimize the infection and the itchy feeling.  
  • Applying moisturizer for 3 minutes after bath will help to lock the moisturizer for a long time. 
  • At the time of every wash and bath, mild-soap or non-soap cleanser should be used. 
  • Patients need to wear cotton fabrics. They should avoid scratchy and tight clothing 
  • Patients should try to avoid extreme dryness. They can use a humidifier in different weather condition. They should avoid rubbing after the bath rather gently patting the skin before drying the skin. 
  • Patients should avoid certain eczema triggers like certain foods or dry weather. They should keep their nails short so that scratching effect will be less. 
  • As a home remedy, patients can use the dilute solution of the vinegar or the tap water by a compressor. These will help to get the effect of the medications prescribed by the dermatologists. 

Medications for eczema 

Dermatologists prescribe the medicines depending on the symptoms, age of the patients and the skin allergy condition. The medicines for eczema prescribe by the doctors are: 

Topical Corticosteroids: 

This topical corticosteroid is found as creams or ointments which can relieve the inflammation and itchiness of the skin. These creams are directly applied to the skin. 

Systemic corticosteroids 

When the topical corticosteroids do not show any effects, then doctors prescribed this systemic corticosteroid medicine for a short period of time. These medicines are taken by injection or by mouth. 

Antibiotic medicines 

Antibiotics are prescribed by the doctors when bacterial infection occur within eczema. Antifungal and antiviral medicines are prescribed when fungal infection or viral infection occurs. The antihistamines are used to minimize the itchiness at the night time. This medicine can cause slight drowsiness as the side effect of this medicine. 

Topical Calcineurin 

This medicine can minimize the inflammation by suppressing the activity of the immune system. It can also prevent the flare-ups 

Moisturizing medicines 

The barrier repair moisturizers can reduce the water loss and help to repair the skin. 

Light therapy 

By using the UV-light A and B, the light therapy is conducted to remove the eczema inflammation. This method uses the two types of UV alone or sometimes, combined. In this case, the skin of the patient is continuously monitored. This process can treat moderate dermatitis. 

Though the treatments cannot cure eczema 100%, only can solve some issues of the symptoms of eczema, certain care plan for the eczema treatment should be followed. For those patients whose skin is naturally healed, certain care and necessary medications should be used so that the irritation cannot occur again.
