Diagnose Bacterial Infections—————————————————————————————————————————————–
The ingrown pubic hairs grow back under the skin instead of the top of the skin surface. This condition occurs at the time of shaving, waxing, or plucking hairs. If ingrown hairs develop, symptoms like small and round bumps, or pus-filled small bumps can be seen which are called papules and pustules. Sometimes, these formations can be darker in color and then these are known as hyperpigmentation.

These bumps or pigmented forms can be itchy or painful. Ingrown hairs can be the cause of further infection which can be serious. So, people should know how to identify ingrown hairs and they need to take doctor’s suggestion as soon as possible.

Identifying ingrown hair

The infectious ingrown hair can appear as the red bump in the first stage. Over time, the infection increases, pus formed, and the size of the bump increases. The infectious area turns to swelled, itchy, warm and irritated red area with time.

The Reason behind the ingrown hair formation

  • People who have thick and curly hair, tend to have the ingrown hairs more than people who have thin and fine hair. Curly hair tends to bend back and so, it re-enters the skin and forms ingrown hairs especially when the skin is cut or shaved or tweezed. The hair which grows back has the sharp edge which can easily poke through the skin and be trapped below the surface of the skin.
  • People who have high levels of sex hormones have the tendency to have high growth of hair and so, they tend to have ingrown hair formation especially after the shaving.
  • The Latinos, African-American have this skin conditions more because they have thick hairs. They called this skin condition “razor bump”.

Prevention of the formation of the ingrown hair

As the shaving, plucking, tweezing, and waxing causes the formation of the ingrown hairs, stopping these activities would be the real preventive measures but, actually, this is not possible practically. So, we can follow some steps to minimize the growth of the ingrown hair. These are:

  • Priming:

Treating the area before using the razor would be a good help to stop the growth of ingrown hairs. We just have to rub mildly the area before shaving with mild soap, or lubricating shaving cream or gel, or other creams for sensitive skin.

  • Using single-bladed razor:

There are some special razors which are designed to minimize the risk of the formation of ingrown hair. these razors or the single-bladed razor can be used for shaving. Besides, the razor should be clean, fresh, and not dull.

  • Laser hair removal:

The laser hair removal can prevent the hair to grow back as it removes the hair from a deeper level and it damages the hair follicle which stops the growth of hair for a long time. It is less effective for people who have blond or light-colored hair.

  • Non-razor hair removal:

As an alternative of razor hair removal process, the chemical hair removal can work well. For the sensitive skin, it can create irritation. In that case, people should test for a small area and check if any reaction occurs within 24 hours. Moreover, there are some creams that doctors, sometimes, prescribe which can minimize the hair regrowth.

However, the electrolysis process is the most convenient hair removal process though it expensive. It can remove hair permanently. It requires a series of the session to complete the course.

Treatments for infected ingrown hair

In the case of moderate infection for ingrown hair, some home remedies are enough to treat it. These are:

  • Wash or lightly scrub the area which can loosen the hair from the follicle and thus remove the hair.
  • The tea tree oil can alleviate the infection and can stop it to get worse.
  • The oatmeal lotion can also soothe the affected skin.
  • The over-the-counter cream like the hydrocortisone cream can relieve the itching.

When the bacterial infection is severe and cannot be removed by the home remedies, patients should check it with the help of the dermatologists. Dermatologists prescribe medicines or creams for preventing the growth of the ingrown hairs at first. Then at the chronical stage, they prescribe medicines or treatments for reducing the infections. Treatments can be like:

  • Steroid creams which can reduce the inflammation.
  • Antibiotic creams can treat the infection.
  • Coaxing the hair out can help to slower the hair regrowth.
  • Retinoid creams can remove the dead skin cells which might be the cause of the formation of ingrown hair. these creams can help to remove the scars formed for the infection.

Doctors prescribe oral steroids and oral antibiotics if the infection shows the risk of spreading to the internal organs or blood.
